Test Your Principles

Let’s fire up your coaching habits and take ’em for a spin.

As a kid, what did you do when the teacher wasn’t paying attention?

Did you follow the rules or break them?

Were you driven by your own inner motivations, or by rebelling against outside authority?

Were you able to manage yourself, or did chaos result?

In other words …

What happens for you when you don’t have external guidelines to follow, or someone enforcing them?

Experiment with following your own principles.

Take a moment and review your goals, values, and motivations.

  • What are you doing, and why?
  • How do you want to live?
  • What kind of person do you want to be?
  • What’s most important to you right now?

If you didn’t have a coach keeping an eye on you, how would you be accountable to yourself?

Explore what it’s like to build your own practices with a little more freedom. For example …

You don’t have to be “on a program” to exercise.

You can just… move your body, and notice how it feels when you do that.

You don’t need workout rules or a gym.

If you like your current routine, feel free to stick with it. If you want to try something else, go for it.

If you want to lie on the couch for a week, that’s your call too. (Notice how you feel when you do that, though.)

You don’t have to be “on a diet” to eat well, consistently.

You can just… make thoughtful food choices, and notice how it feels when you do that.

You don’t need diet rules or a strict plan.

If you like your current routine, feel free to stick with it. If you want to try something else, go for it.

If you want to eat garbage for a week, that’s your call too. (Notice how you feel when you do that, though.)

Gather data about what happens when you make choices.

Keep writing your “Owner’s Manual”.

Experiment. Try stuff. What do you learn?

Notice what you’re thinking and doing.

Notice cause and effect. Notice how you’re “showing up” to a situation without “rules”.

Notice what happens when you spend time navigating without a map.

  • Can you still keep moving forward on your own for a few days?
  • Which practices are solid?
  • Which practices need more repetition or support?
  • Which practices disappear like a rat off a sinking ship?

There’s no wrong or right here.

Whatever happens, happens. Just notice.
